The representatives of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) attended National University “Odessa Maritime Academy” to conduct a seminar on “Inspection State Inspectorate of the Port, its requirements and characteristics, survey questions, rules changes, losses and repair procedures” on May 16, 2017.

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) is a classification society with a mission to provide survey and certification services, develop standards and engineering solutions for the maritime industry.

ABS’s aim is to to promote the security of life, property and the natural environment, primarily through the development and verification of standards for the design, construction and operational maintenance of marine-related facilities.

ABS’ core service is the development of standards called ABS Rules. These Rules form the basis for assessing the design and construction of new vessels and its maintenance; conducting technical supervision of repairs, operation of ships and offshore structures; technical supervision of repair works, operation of ships and offshore structures; classification services, including survey of ships for compliance with safety standards of navigation. ABS introduces innovative engineering developments, methods of energy efficiency and sustainable environmental development in its activities; cooperates with maritime companies, profile structures and other interested organisations; studies of strength and machine stability, equipment to ensure safe working conditions, preventing environmental pollution.

According to the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine ABS is authorized to carry out technical supervision of vessels entitled to sail under the flag of Ukraine.
