On March 10, 2025, the Mayor of Odesa, Hennadiy Trukhanov, visited the National University “Odessa Maritime Academy” to familiarize himself with its material and technical base and to meet with the university staff and students.

During the meeting, Hennadiy Trukhanov expressed his respect and gratitude for the teaching staff of NUOMA for their high quality work and supported the students’ right choice in selecting NUOMA as their place of study.

The Mayor emphasized: “Graduates of National University “Odessa Maritime Academy” are ambassadors of Odesa in the world” and highlighted that Ukraine owes the global recognition of Ukrainian seafarers in the labour market to the high quality of maritime education in NUOMA: “This institution has proven its strength to the world.”

He also addressed the issue of the erroneous intentions previously expressed by the representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine regarding the reorganization of the National University “Odessa Maritime Academy” as part of the optimization of maritime higher education institutions.

Hennadiy Trukhanov stated that the Odesa City Council had unanimously approved and sent the appeal to the President of Ukraine regarding the necessity for the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to make a grounded and well-balanced decision when optimizing the network of maritime higher education institutions, taking into account the strategic importance of the National University “Odessa Maritime Academy” for Ukraine’s maritime industry and the city of Odesa.

 “Optimization should be done wisely – properly. And we will continue to insist on this,” Hennadiy Trukhanov emphasized in the conclusion of his speech.
